Weekly Topic: Functions vs State

All our life, the Lower Self is lost in functions. Each of the four centers execute movement, emotion and thought. A State is consciousness that is not impeded by the mechanics of our self and its functions. It is an experience that transcends the Lower Self and is higher and unique to each of us.

“Our Higher Centers are not our lower functions. Surprisingly, they make their way because they are real and the lower centers are not.” The Teacher
“The four wordless breaths are consciousness without functions, presence without words, and are the very heart of this school.” The Teacher

Weekly Exercise:

Here are a few suggestions with the aim of moving us beyond function to consciousness.

When you eat, put down your fork between bites and taste the food.

When you see a flower, stop to look at it and/or smell its fragrance.

When you speak or listen to someone, look into their eyes.
