Weekly Topic: Buffers

It seems to be human nature to see ourself through the filter of imagination. In sleep (second state), one’s Instinctive Center perpetuates this false imagery of who we are. It is in this state where buffers work to shield us from not only what our Lower Self cannot handle but what is real and true. In this state of imagination, there is no effort to self remember and we buffer any contradictions to our false beliefs. Conversely, when we see ourselves objectively from a higher state, buffers are not present. It is in those moments where truth and Self exists.

“Buffers make a man’s life easy. It is very hard to live without buffers. But they keep man from the possibility of inner development because buffers are made to lessen shocks and it is only shocks that can lead a man out of the state in which he lives, that is, waken him.” PD Ouspensky
From the Teacher, “Controlling the Lower Self, the Instinctive Center will always remain a lifetime challenge.”“Any negative emotion is a buffer to Self-Remembering. It is much easier to be negative than to be present.”

Weekly Exercise:

This week take note of buffers which prevent you from seeing things as they are. Do you have habitual buffers that keep you asleep?
