The Many ‘I’s, the Many Lies
I recall an incident some time ago where I got feedback from somebody on a project I had been working on. They were not particularly supportive of my path on this project, and I found the encounter very discouraging.
In hindsight, it would be more accurate to say, that an ‘I,’ or a group of ‘I’s became discouraged. Those ‘I’s then proceeded to ruin my “mood” for the rest of the day. They poisoned the whole. They kept me asleep. One group of ‘I’s declared they were the whole, a false master, and all my other ‘I’s acquiesced.
The lower self lies to itself to elevate itself. − The Teacher
Why should one ‘I’ or one group of ‘I’s dictate my state, the amount of sleep that I get, or my level of anxiety? What can I do to prepare for or counteract this tendency?
Observing the many ‘I’s is the first step. The second step is not believing the ‘I’s. And to effectively do that, it is necessary to divide my attention or remember myself. With these three practical efforts, I have a chance to transform the disappointment that is felt by one part of the machine and to avoid spoiling the whole.
When the part is the whole, I am believing a lie. The truth cannot stand firmly on a lie, however, so I am on shaky grounds. And my state cannot rise until and unless I have the perspective that this lie is occupying space. My real life is in a higher state.
One thing is certain, and the rest is lies. − Omar Khayyam
Yes, it is possible to make something from nothing but to do that, I must be aware of myself and try to be in the moment. Patterns of sleep such as believing the many ‘I’s keep me from rising to my highest potential and living a real life. The Teacher often says, “The many ‘I’s, the many lies.”
Please do not believe the many ‘I’s; instead, place your identity in the observer, your real Self.
The many ‘I’s are not one, but what observes them is one. − The Teacher
