Order from Chaos: The Inner Steward
From my friend and fellow student, Dharmesh Shah of the Ahmedabad Center
The lower self loves bringing chaos; Higher Self brings order to the chaos. The many ‘I’s bring chaos, and the nine of hearts inside us reigns in the many ‘I’s. The present is sublime, orderly, with everything in its place, but one needs to enter the present. The queens of the centres thrive on the chaos they create, but the mature steward and nine of hearts are ahead of the game and will sever it.
The ancient text says, “As Above So Below.” The higher worlds work on the principles of order and harmony. It is the lower worlds that thrive on chaos. Man is a microcosmos, and in order to awaken, his mechanical life that is subject to the chaotic many I’s and Law of Accident, it must be transformed by the laws that govern higher worlds.
The effort required every moment is to keep the order not only inside oneself, but in the external environment too. Imagine a wardrobe that is neatly organised, where the ties and clothes are arranged, against one where the garments are piled in a disorderly heap. Imagine a workspace where the stationery, files, papers, and impressions are intentionally placed on a desk against a workstation where papers are lying around haphazardly. We know what chaos feels like when we are at a crossroads and the traffic signals do not work, and vehicles come in from every direction.
Plato said, “There is an immortal conflict going on among us which requires marvellous watchfulness.” Spiritual masters teach us to transform the conflict-chaos into Presence. Before the conductor enters, the musicians of the orchestra are tuning their instruments, producing chaotic sounds. Once the conductor enters and raises his baton, and begins the concert, the chaos that was ensuing a few moments ago is transformed into beautiful music. The melody, harmony, and rhythm start unfolding; the effort for the listener is to receive the energy of the music by being empty of the I’s. If one gets identified during the concert with someone’s dress or where one is going to dine after the concert, then the experience is lost. Cosmic Laws are still there, but I am absent, lost in imagination. As soon as one notices that one has slipped into imagination, one has the choice of returning to the music.
Rodney Collin said, “The body lives in space and time, subject to matter, illusion and sense. The spirit lives in eternity and truth. The soul must unite the two. So all that is certainty belongs to the spirit, all that is struggle belongs to the soul. The spirit knows God, the soul has faith; the spirit knows God, the soul has hope; the spirit knows God, the soul has charity. This is how the soul is made to vibrate, and man becomes one, becomes himself.”
