A weekly exercise

A weekly exercise

Each week an exercise will be posted for the aim of living consciously.

I loved to talk. As a child I talked all day long. I was the funny one and my family encouraged me to be so. There was very little silence, as my voice filled the house and the houses of those I visited. My desire to hear people laugh and to make people smile kept me talking. I was a talking machine.

It wasn’t until I was introduced as a teenager to meditation, that I discovered the purity of silence and the ability to listen to and receive many gifts from a divine source.

Fifty years later, and many paths travelled, I met the School and the Teacher. I will always remember the first time I heard him speak of unnecessary talking and the use of wit. I had many “I’s” as my Lower Self struggled with my effort to stop these two life long habits. These days I am smaller, quieter and more present.

Sit quietly, and listen for a voice that will say, ‘Be more silent.’ Die and be quiet. Quietness is the surest sign that you’ve died. Your old life was a frantic running from silence. Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking. Rumi

This week listen to yourself talk. Are you adding value to the conversation or do you like being heard? Make an effort to give others who often don’t speak the opportunity to be heard.
