Weekly Topic: Simplicity
From our friend Joan of the New York Center
Our lives are filled with simple moments. We can capture these ordinary moments with self-remembering by looking into the eyes of another person who is handing us an object. This transaction — simple in nature — can heighten our awareness and transform an ordinary moment into an extraordinary state.
By dividing attention between the Self and the other person, this simple pause invoked by eye contact can suspend a moment of time, producing a direct and immediate connection between two people sharing presence. It is a conscious act of external consideration and wordlessly communicates, "Here we are together in this moment and I see you." Two people sharing a vivid moment of life: Presence.
“Friend, face me so and raise Unto my face thy face,Unto mine eyes thy gaze,Unto my soul its grace.”Sappho
Weekly Exercise
This week, gather those moments of conscious connection between your Self and another. Gaze into their eyes with Presence as they hand you a cup of coffee, a receipt, a yellow Lego brick from a child, a letter or package from the mail carrier, etc. Make all of these conscious gifts and receive them with gratitude.
