Be The Miraculous

P.D. Ouspensky’s book In Search of the Miraculous was, and still is, one of the principle publications available to individuals who are looking for a more meaningful existence. It seems more than a curiosity that a systematic non-religious introduction to conscious evolution, would include the religiously evocative word miraculous.

What is the miracle that Peter Ouspensky searched for and how would we know it if or when we ourselves found it? Without diving too deep into the etymology of the word, we can say that a miracle is a higher order of creation manifesting within and upon a lower order.

Within and upon. When we remember ourselves, the four lower centers, to the extent they are able, experience a higher order of consciousness. In those moments, wordless presence, the miraculous, that is, Higher Centers appear. The advent of repeated experiences of self-remembering leading to the permanent connection to higher centers is only possible with outside help, that is, with assistance of those themselves who have completely escaped a mechanical existence.

Within such an environment, or organization, is a leader in whom higher centers are fully functional. He or she teaches and explains to the students how to achieve the same as well as establishing rules, exercises and tasks. Within this organization both teacher and students pursue three lines of effort. The first line comprises efforts to remember oneself. The second line is helping others remember themselves, and third line is supporting the organization without any personal agenda. Even so, efforts on all three lines support self-remembering.

The above description is, of course, that of a school. Within a school individuals are taught and learn to Be the miraculous. At first self-remembering appears sporadically. As the student's efforts mature, introducing and prolonging presence becomes more firm. Only after making consistent efforts more frequently, when a student’s work reaches a degree of intensity, does the miraculous - higher centers - not only appear, they become a permanent characteristic of a student's being.
